Woolacombe's seafront is an unlikely prelude to a climb this steep. Challacombe Hill carries the road south from the resort towards Woolacombe Down, exchanging the level of the beach for the rising coastal hillside. The first part is comparatively measured, giving the ascent a change of character once the slope tightens. Over about 1.3 kilometres the road averages 12.6%, so the gentler introduction accounts for only a small part of the work.
The middle and upper slopes make the strongest impression. Height accumulates quickly above the bay, with the coastal setting giving this short Devon climb a distinct identity. The gradient eventually softens from its hardest section, although the final rise still demands attention. There is no need to make Challacombe longer in the telling: the transition from seaside road to steep hillside is enough. A brief ascent with a surprisingly substantial middle.
