Col de Vergio

Starting near the coast at Porto, the western approach to Col de Vergio draws you inland through the Spelunca landscape towards Évisa. Around 33 kilometres of road separate the start from the pass, but the ascent has distinct changes of pace. The lower road follows the mountainside above the gorges, then eases before climbing again towards the village. That interruption gives the journey a broader rhythm than a simple continuous ramp.

Beyond Évisa, the road enters the forest of Aïtone, where Corsican pines bring a different scale and shade to the upper climb. The final section is more sustained, with the woodland accompanying the road towards the crest. At the summit, the Christ-Roi statue marks a recognisable end to the long approach from the sea. Vergio’s appeal lies in that gradual passage from coastal country into the wooded mountains of the interior.
