About Crowcombe Combe
Collections
The lane leaving Crowcombe for Over Stowey makes a sharp departure from village life, climbing into the wooded western flank of the Quantocks. Trees close around the road, keeping attention on the strip of tarmac ahead rather than the country below. At roughly 1.3 kilometres, this is a compact ascent, but an average gradient of 14.8% gives it the substance of something considerably longer. Even the opening feels purposeful; the harder slopes arrive once the village is behind you.
There is little variation that could be mistaken for a rest. The road keeps gaining height through the woods, and the upper portion sustains the effort rather than easing towards a gentle finish. Its character comes from that combination of enclosed landscape and persistent steepness: a small Somerset lane with very little spare room in its gradient. Crowcombe earns its place quietly enough.
