About Dowgang Hush
Dowgang Hush climbs southwest from Nenthead, taking a steep road out of the village towards the North Pennine uplands. The ascent begins abruptly, with the lower houses still close when the gradient starts to dictate the pace. A temporary easing interrupts the first hard section, but another ramp follows rather than a comfortable escape. At only about 1.4 kilometres, the route has little need for a long approach: its character is established almost at once.
The higher road continues in demanding pitches, with open views replacing the enclosed beginning. An apparent crest near a small wood does not mark the end, and the last part of the climb still requires work before the wider outlook arrives. Around 10.7% overall, this is a sustained steep ascent rather than one isolated wall. The contrast between village streets and exposed country is abrupt, and the climb makes full use of that small distance.
